Located just five miles northeast of Buckhead, Atlanta, Brookhaven is a fairly new city with deep historical roots. It’s home to around 53,000 residents and consists of several diverse neighborhoods. Brookhaven is also the largest city in DeKalb County with a wide variety of shops, restaurants, recreational activities, and real estate properties that have made it a sought-after suburb of Atlanta, GA.
History of Brookhaven, GA
While Brookhaven only became a city in 2012, it is already the 13th largest in Georgia. The area of Brookhaven was originally the home of Creek Indians. In the early 1800s, John L. Evins became the area’s first European settler. He established a plantation before Solomon Goodwin took ownership just before the Civil War began in 1861. Goodwin built a log cabin that stands to this day. Salson Stovall became the main property owner in the late 1800s.
The area became a vacation retreat when prominent Atlantans began building summer cottages in the early 1900s. Over the years, neighborhoods, homes, and country clubs such as the Brookhaven Country Club sprang up. Residents then campaigned for the area to become a city and Brookhaven was officially incorporated in 2012.
Brookhaven’s ties to the past and the large number of historic homes that have been preserved led to its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. John R. Brannen, a Brookhaven resident, and the Historic Preservation Section of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources filed for its listing and the Brookhaven Historic District was created.
