History
Incorporated in December 1822, DeKalb was formed from sections of Fayette, Gwinnett, and Henry Counties. It encompassed Atlanta and portions of Fulton County before the latter was established in 1853.
The cities of DeKalb are:
- Avondale Estates

- Doraville
- Dunwoody

Named for Baron Johann de Kolb, a German native who served under the Continental Army, the county lives up to the heroics of its namesake – much of the Battle of Atlanta took place here in July 1864. The county seat, Decatur, was named after Stephen Decatur, a distinguished naval hero.
The county’s earliest inhabitants were the Cherokee before settlers of English, Scottish, and Irish descent arrived from Virginia and the Carolinas. Many of these settlers were subsistence farmers. Granite quarrying, dairy farming, cotton mills, and grain mills would flourish later on in addition to farming.
Lands located near the South River produced over 1,000 pounds of cotton per acre, and DeKalb became one of the biggest milk producers of the southeast. The county would also go on to supply vegetables to other parts of the region.
