History of Buckhead, GA

The city of Buckhead got its name from the legacy left by Henry Irby, who established a general store and tavern in 1837. Travelers often made the tavern their stop, where Irby hung the “buck head” of a large deer that he had hunted down.

Over the years, settlers made their way to Buckhead, lured by the area’s natural beauty and wide, open spaces. There, they built saw mills and grist mills, established ferrying services, and opened pottery shops. Many wealthy Atlantans also began building their own summer vacation homes in Buckhead. Soon, neighborhoods and subdivisions began to flourish. In 1952, the city officially became a part of Atlanta.
