History of Chamblee, GA

Incorporated by the Georgia legislature on August 17, 1908, the city of Chamblee was originally known for its pastureland and dairy farms. Railroads began to pass through the city during the Georgia railroad boom of the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1917, the arrival of American infantrymen became the impetus for the city’s development. Camp Gordon housed over 40,000 members of the US military. This population boom resulted in a rise in local businesses like theatres, hotels, and stores.

It’s unclear how Chamblee got its name. Some say that the city’s name came from an 1885 petition to establish a post office in the area. The U.S. Postal Service then used the name of an African-American railroad worker named Chamblee. Others say that the city was named after a family called Chamblee who were the area’s first settlers.
